Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
204 AM EDT Sun May 18 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure lingers over the area Sunday into Monday bringing
continued chances for showers. High pressure briefly builds in
from the north Tuesday and Wednesday. Another slow moving low
pressure system approaches Thursday and will linger near the
Northeast into next weekend with chances for periods of heavy
rain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Widespread shower and thunderstorm activity has pushed off well
to the northeast as of 06z. A few lingering showers remain, as
will patches of fog through the early morning hours.

Upper level low pressure to our west will move overhead today as
SFC low pressure strengthens over Downeast ME. Upper lows
overhead in May generally produce mostly and showery conditions
and today will not be much that different. Any early morning
sunshine will give way to cloud cover a scattered showers. A
thunderstorm cannot be ruled out this afternoon as cold
temperatures aloft couple with modest SFC heating. Highs look to
be in the mid to upper 60s on the coastal plain and across
southern NH while cooler values are expected with more cloud
cover in the mountains and foothills.

Winds will likely become gusty in the CAA regime across
southern NH by late afternoon. 25 MPH gusts there seem likely
based on forecast soundings.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Broad moist cyclonic flow continues over New England tonight
and Monday. This will ensure plenty of clouds along with
scattered showers along with well below normal high temps on
Monday. It is not out of the question that a few snowflakes fall
in northern NH such as in Pittsburg early monday morning. Wind
gusts of 25 to 30 MPH should be common on Monday in the wake of
the departing low pressure system.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
1045 PM Update... Little change in the latest NBM suite of
guidance. Below normal temperatures and unsettled conditions
will be the main theme.

As the next upper low approaches from the Great Lakes a surface low
will develop over the Mid Atlantic Wednesday night. Models diverge
on the track of this low with some solutions taking the bulk of the
precipitation south of the area and others track the system into the
Gulf of Maine Thursday bringing a widespread soaking rainfall. Have
mainly stuck with the NBM PoPs that bring 70-80 percent chances of
rain Thursday with PoPs diminishing to 40-50 percent Saturday.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Short Term...Gradual improvement in vsbys and cigs are expected
today. There will be some showers around with locally lower
conditions today and Monday but fog will be long gone through
Monday.

Long Term...VFR likely prevails across all TAF sites Tuesday
into Wednesday. Low pressure approaches Wednesday night bringing
the threat for restrictions Thursday.

&&

.MARINE...
Short Term...As the low pressure becomes centered near the Bay
of Fundy Sunday evening Sunday night, NW winds will increase
enough to where a SCA is needed for the southern waters.

Long Term...Offshore winds will prevail Tuesday with gusts
generally below 25 kts. High pressure builds in from the north
Tuesday night and Wednesday shifting winds out of the northeast
and then east. Low pressure approaching from the Mid Atlantic
Thursday will bring enhanced easterly flow with winds and seas
reaching SCA criteria.

.GYX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

NH...None.
